NYC launches new initiative to help the city’s artists

We’d like to call your attention to the Philanthropy News Digest, a daily news service of the Foundation Center. Of particular note is the Oct. 6, 2009 post on how Mayor Bloomberg and the NYC Economic Development Corporation launched five new initiatives designed to help the city’s artists and cultural institutions weather the recession. Let’s hope the political leaders in many Massachusetts cities can take a page from this playbook. Read more.

Scam Report: Writers Beware!

Anxious to get that novel published?

Be careful whom you trust for help.

Writer Mitch Lipka writes in WalletPop:

How one man (and his many companies) allegedly scammed wanna-be writers

“Following a lengthy investigation (involving 175 complaints) by the Florida Attorney General’s office into Robert M. Fletcher, his girlfriend and two accomplices, along with a large collection of purported companies soliciting writers who wanted to get published — the state filed a lawsuit that details an elaborate alleged scam that ran for at least four years, with victims from throughout the U.S. and as far away as China.”

Nothing replaces legwork and networking in discovering your publishing goal. Don’t get the feeling you have to pay someone else to do the heavy lifting. You just might end up getting ripped off.
