Randolph Student Competes in Poetry Out Loud National Finals May 14-15
Join MCC, Huntington Theatre Co., and poetry lovers across the Commonwealth to cheer on Stephanie Igharosa of Randolph High School as she represents Massachusetts at the annual Poetry Out Loudnational competition!
Sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and Poetry Foundation, Poetry Out Loud is a recitation competition that celebrates the power of the spoken word. It helps students master public speaking skills while cultivating self-confidence and an appreciation for their literary heritage as they take poems from the page to the stage. A record 20,000 students from 81 Huntington-supported high schools across Massachusetts competed in recent months in classroom and school-wide competitions.
Igharosa competed against 22 others in the final round to win the title. She advanced to the National Final competition in Washington, D.C. May 14-15 after brilliant performances of “Richard Cory” by Edwin Arlington Robinson, “The Man with the Hoe” by Edwin Markham, and “The Blues Don’t Change” by Al Young.
Presented by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, in partnership with theMassachusetts Cultural Council and the Huntington Theatre Company, POETRY OUT LOUD encourages students in grades 9-12 to memorize and perform real poems and to explore the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken work, and theatre in their English and Drama classes.
