Get Your Vote On! Governor’s Race

October 27, 2014

This week (Oct. 27-31) MALC’s Get Your Vote On! November 4th General Election focuses on the Governor’s race*. There are four strong candidates running for this office and it is worth the time to learn more about what they stand for and what they want to do if elected Governor.

Instead of sending questionnaires to the candidates for Governor, MALC invited four of the five candidates** to guest blog. We also urged each candidate to release their policy for our sector (and post it on their website) before the November 4th General Election. MALC feels strongly that any candidate seeking to be Governor needs to have a specific and comprehensive policy platform for our sector.

MALC Steering Committee Members Kathleen Bitetti and John Weeks are analyzing the full campaign platforms of each of the four candidates. They are looking at how they impact individual artists of all disciplines and our sector as a whole. They will only look at what is found on the candidate’s website. MALC will also run each candidate’s guest blog (if they submitted one) the same day as the analysis of their campaign platform.

The candidates will be featured in reverse alphabetical order:

Tuesday, October 28th Candidate Jim McCormick
Wednesday, Oct. 29th Candidate Evan Falchuk
Thursday, October 30th Candidate Martha Coakley
Friday, October 31st Candidate Charlie Baker

We can not stress enough how important it is to vote (and to actually be an informed voter). MALC has also posted pieces breaking down the federal and state district races, the races for Attorney General, Treasurer, and Lt. Governor, and the Four Ballot Questions. We urge you to take the time to read these past blog posts and share them with others. More info on these posts: http://artistsunderthedome.org/malc/news/malc-get-vote-press-release/

If you can’t vote on November 4th- take the time to do an absentee ballot!: http://artistsunderthedome.org/malc/news/get-vote-absentee-ballots-yes-vote-nov-4th/

And please mark your calendars for the 8th Annual Artists Under the Dome Event at the Massachusetts State House on Wednesday, November 12th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is free and open to all! http://artistsunderthedome.org/annualevent.html

Also stay tuned for MALC’s collaboration with The Future Boston Alliance on a great evening event on November 12th in Boston as a continuation of and recap of the 8th Annual Artists Under the Dome Event!

In February of this year, MALC released its policy recommendations and advocacy challenge for the candidates running for Governor: http://artistsunderthedome.org/malc/news/the-malc-challenge-for-the-next-governor-be-a-champion-of-arts-culture-and-the-creative-economy/. Members of the MALC Steering Committee met with the four candidates of the five candidates Governor earlier this year and we shared our policy vision for our sector with them: http://artistsunderthedome.org/malc/news/massachusetts-governors-race-update/

**MALC did not reach out to the Lively/Saunders Campaign.

About MALC

MALC does not endorse candidates for office, but seeks to provide needed and timely information about candidates’ platforms and policies that impact artists of all disciplines, the art, and cultural and creative economies. Nor does MALC take positions on the statewide ballot questions.

MALC was founded in July 2008 to bring together artists leaders of all disciplines and artist(s) run organizations, initiatives, and businesses around key issues facing Massachusetts artists working in all disciplines. MALC is committed to improving the social and economic position of all Massachusetts artists. The overall goal is to empower our community, support our artists leaders, and mentor new artist leaders. We want to ensure that artists are at the policy making table. MALC is the artist working group for our state’s Creative Economy Council (CEC).
