2018 Champion of Artists Awardee Spotlight: Lou Jones
As we lead up to 12th Annual “Artists Under The Dome” Event and the MALC 2018 “Champion of Artists” Awards on November 14, 2018, at the State House, we are highlighting each of the six “Champion of Artists” awardees. This post is highlighting Lou Jones.
This is the third time MALC has given these awards, which will be part of the morning program. The award ceremony will begin at 10:30am in the State House’s Great Hall, located on the second floor. This ceremony, along with all the events that are part of the annual Artists Under the Dome event, are free and open to the public. Lou Jones is, without a doubt, one of the most accomplished and well-respected photographers working in the U.S. and beyond. He is also someone who takes time to mentor and support photographers of all ages and abilities. Lou has served on the boards of directors of numerous photographic associations, societies, and museums such as the American Society of Media Photographers, the Photographic Resource Center and the Griffin Museum of Photography. He helped found the Center for Digital Imaging Arts of Boston University and conceived the prestigious Griffin Museum’s annual Focus Awards.
Lou has used his photography to change minds and policy. The first book he published, Final Exposure: Portraits from Death Row, earned Lou the Ehrmann Award from Massachusetts Citizens Against the Death Penalty. He initiated long term projects on the civil wars in Central America and is now documenting the entire continent of Africa with his ambitious panAFRICAproject, currently funded through crowdsourcing and foundations.

Lou Jones’ eclectic career has evolved from commercial to the personal. It has spanned every format, film type, artistic movement and technological change. He has photographed for Fortune 500 corporations, advertising agencies, international companies and stateside businesses including Federal Express, Nike, Aetna, International Association of Ironworkers, Millennium Partners, KLM and the Barr Foundation. He has completed assignments for magazines and publishers all over the world such as Time/Life, National Geographic, Fortune and Paris Match and covered thirteen summer and winter Olympic Games.
For his photography, Jones has been awarded many accolades from organizations like Communication Arts Magazine, Art Directors Club of Boston, Travel Photographer of the Year and International Photographic Council (United Nations). Nikon recognizes Jones as a “Legend Behind the Lens” and Lowepro has honored him as a “Champion”.
Lou’s work has been shown in colleges and schools such as Trinity College, Texas Tech University and Mount Ida College, and also at the Smithsonian Institution, DeCordova Museum, African American Museum in Philadelphia and the Boston Athenaeum. His photographic work is owned by various collections including the Fogg Museum, Wellesley College and the University of Texas.
In addition, Jones lectures and teaches workshops all over the world, including at the PhotoPlus Expo in New York City, the Ford Hall Forum at Suffolk University, New England Camera Club Council’s annual conference, and Estúdio Brasil in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
