Get Your Vote On! Republican and Democratic Candidates for State Treasurer
One of the co-founders of the Annual Artists Under the Dome event at the Massachusetts State House was the State Treasurer’s Office. We are the only state in the country to have such an event. MALC has had a great working relationship with the current and last Treasurers’ administrations and we have every hope of continuing this collaboration with the next Treasurer. (Save the Date: This Year’s AUD is scheduled for Wednesday, November 12!).
We are happy to report that all four of the candidates running in the September 9th primary* for this state-wide office returned the MALC questionnaire. Like the Democratic Attorney General primary race**, the Democratic Treasurer’s race is very competitive with three candidates vying to be on the November ballot. Every vote matters in that race, so MALC encourages our community to take the time to learn about each of the Democratic candidates. Once again, there is no race on the Republican side with only one candidate running. Even though is almost all but certain that candidate will be on the November ballot, it is important to take the time to read their questionnaire answers and to take the time to view their campaign website.
We have created pdfs of the candidates answers that share the same formatting for visual consistency. We have linked to all four of the candidates’ campaign website and we have also included the questions MALC asked and the informational links that were included in the questionnaires at the end of this post. MALC does not endorse candidates for office.

*From our June 9th MALC blog post: “There will be primaries in September for candidates of the Democratic and the Republican parties who are running for statewide positions. The winners of those primaries will be on the November ballot for the general election. Those candidates running as unenrolled (also known as independents), and who have met the 10,000 certified signature requirement, won’t have a primary in September. Instead, their names will appear on the November ballot along with those candidates who won their respective party’s primaries.” http://artistsunderthedome.org/malc/news/massachusetts-governors-race-update/

MALC Questions for State Treasurer Candidates:
(Note: Questions 1-3 can be answered with a yes or no, but please feel free to elaborate beyond a one word answer)
1. MALC has had a great working relationship with the last two Treasurers and their administrations. Would you continue this open door policy to MALC and by extension to the arts and creative economy communities?
Background info: http://www.artistsunderthedome.org/history.html
2. The Treasurer’s Office was one of the cofounders of the Annual Artist Under the Dome event at the State House and it remains one of its key supporters. If elected Treasurer, will you continue the office’s support for this annual event?
Background info: http://www.artistsunderthedome.org/annualevent.html
3. MALC has been working to establish a disaster/emergency fund for artists of all disciplines that would be held/managed by the Treasurer’s office. All funds would be from outside sources, but in the case of a national disaster (ie Katrina/9/11 type of emergencies) it would allow for additional funding from the Federal government and/or other governmental/private sources to address the increased critical need.
Link to the most recent piece of legislation to create such a fund: https://malegislature.gov/Bills/188/Senate/S1625
4. Is there anything else you would like to share in regards to your policy and/or platforms that directly impacts artists of all disciplines and by extension the arts and creative economy communities?
