Vogue UK Copyright Grabbing
Fashion trends come and go, but at MALC we believe snatching copyrights from creatives is always unfashionable. Unfortunately, fashion arbiter Vogue UK disagrees. The Condé Nast magazine is currently holding a talent contest in which young writers may submit original works of nonfiction.
“We’re looking for journalists with an eye for a good story, who can tell it with originality, wit and structure,” says Vogue UK. Sadly, the magazine is also looking to freely take immediate ownership of all submissions: Condition of Entry #3 stipulates, “Copyright of entries belongs to the Condé Nast Publications Ltd.”
Vogue UK’s talent contest lures young writers by presenting itself as a platform to launch careers in the creative arts, potentially landing a job at Vogue itself. But by seeking to secure the copyright of their work, it sends the message that Vogue does not value the creative class. That is a fashion crime, pure and simple.
