Congress Restores Arts And Humanities Funding

July 16, 2014

In a bipartisan move, the U.S. House of Representatives Interior Appropriations Subcommittee on Tuesday rejected a proposal to cut $8 million from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Thank you to all MALC members and supporters who joined Americans for the Arts in telling Congress to stop the cuts.

The decision to restore the funds was led by Interior Subcommittee Chairman Ken Calvert (R-CA) and Ranking Member Nita Lowey (D-NY). This is a great example of bipartisan support for the arts and humanities. It is also a valuable lesson for arts advocates as it underscores how imperative it is to respectfully and consistently engage all elected officials, no matter their party affiliation, when advocating for artists’ rights, arts & culture funding, and the creative economy.
