Mass Cultural Council Welcomes Funding Increase

Legislature Approves State Budget that Boosts Cultural Funding by $2M

(Boston, MA) – Today the state Legislature approved a final budget for the new fiscal year that boosts funding for the arts, humanities, and sciences through Mass Cultural Council by $2 million.

The FY19 budget funds Mass Cultural Council at $16 million, a nearly 15 percent increase over last year that will allow the agency to increase its statewide support for nonprofit organizations, communities, artists, education and creative youth.

The increase comes after a concerted statewide advocacy effort involving Mass Cultural Council and its partners, MASSCreative, Mass Humanities, Mass Artists Leaders Coalition, and individual arts and cultural leaders across the Commonwealth. (more…)

Great news for MA Arts and Culture Sector!

Compromise State Budget released!

Mass Cultural Council and cultural agencies have increases!

Today the Budget Conference Committee released its compromise state budget for the next fiscal year. Both the House and Senate will need to vote on it.

This vote is a “yes or no” vote and no amendments are allowed at this stage of the budget process.

After the vote (assuming both branch approve the budget), it goes to the governor and he can veto/amend it and send it back to the Legislature to either accept or override his vetoes/amendments. (more…)

Yesterday, the House Rules Committee green-lighted an amendment sponsored by Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-WI). His amendment would cut funding to the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) by $23 million each – a 15% cut to each agency.

Update: Copyright Office Fee Increase – Comments Due September 21, 2018!

[note color=”#FFCC00″]Update! The comment period for the Copyright Office’s proposed fee schedule increases has been extended to September 21, 2018, 11:59pm Eastern. https://www.copyright.gov/newsnet/2018/723.html[/note]

The U.S. Copyright Office (@CopyrightOffice), Library of Congress, published a “Notice of proposed rule making” in the Federal Register on May 24, 2018, in which they reported the outcome of a study conducted by Booz Allen to address cost recovery goals.

Importantly, the Office has never recovered its full costs from user fees. Instead, the Office has traditionally recovered approximately 60% of its costs through fees; the remainder is provided through appropriated dollars from the U.S. treasury. ~ Federal Register/Vol. 83, No. 101, p. 24055
