Governor Baker Appoints New Chair & Members to MCC<\/p>\n
(Boston, MA) \u2013 Governor Charlie Baker has appointed Nina Fialkow as Chair of the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC). The Governor also appointed six additional new members to the MCC, and reappointed its Vice Chair and three longstanding members to the Council.<\/p>\n
Nina Fialkow is an Emmy Award-winning producer and an independent filmmaker who worked for many years at WGBH. Currently she is a member of the film partnership, Impact Partners, which focuses on social justice themed-documentaries. Mrs. Fialkow is on the National Committee for the Performing Arts at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Trustee and Past Chair of the Board of Overseers of the Boston Ballet, an Overseer of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and member of the Fashion Council of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She and her husband, David Fialkow, live in Boston and are parents of two adult children.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am honored and delighted to serve as Chair of the Massachusetts Cultural Council,\u201d said Mrs. Fialkow. \u201cI am deeply grateful to the Governor for giving me an opportunity to put my passion for the arts and culture to service on behalf of the citizens of the Commonwealth.\u201d<\/p>\n
The statute that created the MCC established a governing body, \u201cconsisting of nineteen members to be appointed by the Governor from among qualified private citizens of the Commonwealth who have demonstrated scholarship or creativity in, or distinguished service to, the arts, humanities, interpretive sciences, or local arts.\u201d The members serve staggered, three-year terms. Governor Baker reappointed Barbara Wallace Grossman, Ph.D., as MCC Vice Chair. A Professor of Drama in the Department of Drama and Dance at Tufts University, Dr. Grossman is a resident of Newton who has served as MCC Vice Chair since 2008.<\/p>\n
The Governor also reappointed the following members: Malcolm Sherman of Wellesley, Belchertown resident Barbara Schaffer Bacon, and Troy Siebels of Shrewsbury.<\/p>\n
The Governor thanked the Council members whose terms recently expired for their many years of service to the MCC and the Commonwealth: former Chair Dr. Ira Lapidus of Williamstown, Kevin Howard of Barnstable, Joyce Kressler of Worcester, Patricia Lorsch of Cambridge, Katherine Sloan of Boston, Zakiya Thomas of Boston, and Lisa Wong of Newton.<\/p>\n

\nThe MCC is a state agency supporting the arts, sciences, and humanities, to improve the quality of life in Massachusetts and its communities. It pursues its mission through a combination of grants, services, and advocacy for nonprofit cultural organizations, schools, communities, and artists. The MCC’s total budget for this fiscal year is $15.7 million, which includes a $14 million state appropriation and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.
