On November 16, 2016, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio signed the Freelance Isn’t Free Act<\/em> into law, and it will go into effect 180 days from signing. \u00a0The law only impacts those freelancing in New York City. From the Freelancers Union blog: \u00a0“This legislation is the first-of-its-kind in the nation and marks an important moment in labor history as it recognizes independent workers as a distinct group. Freelancers Union hopes to engage with its members nationally to replicate this legislation in cities across the states.”<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

MALC made this a key issue in our 2016 Labor Policy Paper<\/a>\u00a0that was\u00a0released at the 10th annual Artists Under the Dome event on November 2nd. \u00a0Currently, MALC is\u00a0exploring legislative and regulatory initiatives\u00a0in our state to address this issue and the other key areas outlined in the labor policy paper.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
