Massachusetts is the only state to hold such an annual event to thank\u00a0artists<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">\u00a0for all they contribute to the Commonwealth&#8217;s economy and quality of life<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">The 2016 event was a collaboration by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mass.gov\/treasury\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Massachusetts State Treasury<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mass.gov\/legis\/comm\/j30.htm\" target=\"_blank\">the Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts and Cultural Development<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artistsunderthedome.org\/art_leaders.html\" target=\"_blank\">the Massachusetts Artists Leaders Coalition<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mass.gov\/hed\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.massculturalcouncil.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Massachusetts Cultural Council<\/a>, and the State House&#8217;s Cultural Caucus &#8211; with special thanks to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.epicentercomm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Epicenter Community<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The morning speaking program featured a welcome by <strong>Kathleen Bitetti<\/strong> (Visual Artist &amp; Cofounder of MALC) and\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><strong>Cindy Cuba Clements<\/strong> &#8211; (Visual Artist,\u00a0Mass Cultural Council\u00a0Board Member &amp; Chair of MCC&#8217;s Grants Committee). The following individuals gave short remarks as part of the morning speaking program:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>State Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Nam Pham<\/strong> &#8211; Assistant Secretary of Business Development &amp; International Trade at the Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing &amp; Economic Development<\/li>\n<li><strong>State Representative Smitty Pignatelli<\/strong> &#8211; House Vice Chair of the Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts &amp; Cultural Development (TACD) &amp; Co-Chair of the Cultural Caucus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It was acknowledged during the morning speaking program that Representative Pignatelli has attended all 10 of the Artists Under the Dome events and that he has served on the Joint TACD Committee since its founding. \u00a0As part of the acknowledgement, <strong>Ja-Nae Duane<\/strong> (Musician, Opera Singer, Author, and MALC Co-founder) sang <em>Ave Maria<\/em> to Rep Pignatelli (he is an avid opera fan).<\/p>\n<p>Several other legislators attended the event, but did not speak: <strong>Senator Joan B. Lovely<\/strong>, <strong>Senator Michael Rodriques<\/strong>, <strong>Representative Jay Kaufman<\/strong>, <strong>Representative Christine Barber<\/strong>, <strong>Representative Paul Donato<\/strong>, <strong>Representative Kevin Honan<\/strong>, and <strong>Representative Denise Provost<\/strong>. <span class=\"Apple-style-span\">Legislative Director &amp; Counsel<\/span>\u00a0<strong>Stephanie Swanson<\/strong> attended on behalf of <strong>Senator Eric Lesser<\/strong> and Senator Sonia Chang-Diaz&#8217;s\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">Senior Legislative Aide and point person on arts, <strong>Anthony Thomas<\/strong>, attended on her behalf.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After the speaking program, MALC,\u00a0for the first time, inaugurated its &#8220;<strong>Champion of Artists Awards<\/strong>&#8220;. \u00a0MALC Steering Committee member <strong>Erin Harris<\/strong> designed the awards and these awards will\u00a0be given annually at the\u00a0Artists Under the Dome event. The two awardees for 2016 were: <strong>Senator Daniel Wolf<\/strong> (<strong>Senate President Rosenberg<\/strong> spoke and accepted the award on his behalf)\u00a0and <strong>State Representative Gloria Fox<\/strong>. MALC thanked\u00a0both legislators for their direct work with MALC and for their dedicated service in supporting the artist community. Representative Fox also spoke and was given a standing ovation for her over 30 years of serving in the state legislature. \u00a0Both Senator Wolf and Representative Fox did not run for re-election and their spirit and dedication to supporting the Commonwealth&#8217;s artists of all disciplines will be missed at the State House.<\/p>\n<p>After the award ceremony, the annual group photo was taken of those attending the event on the State House&#8217;s Grand Staircase (image below).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6540\" src=\"http:\/\/artistsunderthedome.org\/malc\/wp-content\/uploads\/AUD2016-1024x819.jpg\" alt=\"aud2016\" width=\"620\" height=\"496\" srcset=\"http:\/\/artistsunderthedome.org\/malc\/wp-content\/uploads\/AUD2016-1024x819.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/artistsunderthedome.org\/malc\/wp-content\/uploads\/AUD2016-80x64.jpg 80w, http:\/\/artistsunderthedome.org\/malc\/wp-content\/uploads\/AUD2016-300x240.jpg 300w, http:\/\/artistsunderthedome.org\/malc\/wp-content\/uploads\/AUD2016-768x614.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">There was a lunch time celebration for the 10th Anniversary featuring <a href=\"http:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/2016\/11\/05\/artists-under-the-dome\/\" target=\"_blank\">an anniversary cake (courtesy of the MCC) <\/a>and music by Boston Musicians&#8217; Association members: <\/span><strong>Therese DiMuzio<\/strong>, percussion; <strong>Ray Cavicchio,<\/strong> accordian; <strong>Dave Burdett,<\/strong> trumpet; <strong>Craig Ball, <\/strong>clarinet; and\u00a0<strong>Angle Subero<\/strong>, trombone.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">An afternoon panel unveiling <a href=\"http:\/\/artistsunderthedome.org\/malc\/policy\/labor-policy-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\">MALC&#8217;s Labor Policy recommendations<\/a> for the Commonwealth followed the lunch time celebration. The panel featured: <\/span><strong>David Slattery<\/strong> &#8211; Deputy Director of the Massachusetts Cultural Council and\u00a0<strong>Helena Fruscio <\/strong>&#8211; Deputy Assistant Secretary of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Technology for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and Industry Director for the Creative Economy.\u00a0Also featured on the panel were MALC Steering Committee members: <strong>Gloretta Baynes<\/strong> (Visual Artist), <strong>Pat Hollenbeck<\/strong> (Musician &amp; President of Boston Musicians&#8217; Association), and <strong>Chuck Slavin<\/strong> (Union Member of SAG\/AFTRA).
