MALC is a strong supporter of coops of all kinds (housing, business, etc) and is posting this request for support on behalf of \u00a0the Massachusetts Association of Housing Coops<\/a> (MAHC):<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, June 13th at 10am in the State House’s Hearing Room B-2\u00a0the State House\u00a0Joint Committee on Revenue<\/a>\u00a0will hold a hearing and H.3334<\/a>\/S.1520<\/a>,<\/strong> An Act protecting the interests of housing cooperative shareholders \u00a0<\/strong><\/span>will be heard.<\/p>\n

MAHC is asking for written testimony in support of these two bills by Monday, June 12th, 4pm, so the committee staff can share it with the committee members before the hearing. Please send your written testimony via email to: anthony.sacco@mahouse.gov<\/strong><\/p>\n

The hearing is open to the public and written testimony can\u00a0be submitted if you can not testify in person on these bills.<\/p>\n

These bills would\u00a0allow Co-Op Shareholders to partake in\u00a0\u00a0the state income tax deduction for rental expenses (of which they are currently ineligible) so long as they do not claim federal homeownership benefits.\u00a0This will be beneficial to those who do not
\nitemize their federal taxes, and particularly those of low and moderate
\nincomes.<\/p>\n

The maximum deduction will be $250\/year. \u00a0It is expect that approximately
\n1,000 people may take this deduction, statewide, resulting in a loss of
\nrevenue to the state of\u00a0 about $250,000, and relatively small amount which
\nmay be very important to those taking the deduction.<\/span><\/p>\n
