This is the second time MALC has given these awards, which will be part of the morning program (10-11am).*<\/p>\n<p>The five &#8220;Champion of Artists\u201d awardees for 2017 are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>State Representative Chris Walsh<\/li>\n<li>Danielle Legros Georges, Boston\u2019s Poet Laureate<\/li>\n<li>Ashleigh Gordon, viola and Co-Founder of Castle of our Skins<\/li>\n<li>Jonathan C. Rappaport, musician, composer, conductor and Executive Director of Arts Learning<\/li>\n<li>Erin Williams, playwright, theater director, dramaturg, Cultural Development Officer for the City of Worcester and Executive Director of the Worcester Cultural Coalition<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For this blog post we are profiling awardee <strong>Ashleigh Gordon<\/strong>, an acclaimed and sought-after violist and co-founder, violist, and Artistic Director of Castle of our Skins, a concert and educational series devoted to fostering cultural curiosity and celebrating Black artistry through music. Ashleigh has worked and recorded with Switzerland&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ensembleproton.ch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ensemble Proton<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Germany&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ensemble-modern.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ensemble Modern; <\/a>performed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.landmarksorchestra.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boston Landmark&#8217;s Orchestra<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.odysseyopera.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Odyssey Opera <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/afarcry.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A Far Cry<\/a>; and recently performed with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chineke.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chineke! Orchestra<\/a>, Europe&#8217;s first majority Black\/minority ethnic orchestra at the prestigious BBC Proms Festival. Excited by collaborations, Ashleigh enjoys working with living composers and has worked with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beatfurrer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beat Furrer<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/thomasades.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Ad\u00e8s<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schott-music.com\/shop\/persons\/featured\/9042\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heinz Holliger<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.composers21.com\/compdocs\/lachenmh.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Helmut Lachenmann<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/chayaczernowin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chaya Czernowin<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stevereich.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Steve Reich<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.matthiaspintscher.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matthias Pintscher<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/carlsonandcarlson2.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeffrey Mumford<\/a> among many others. Comfortable on an international stage, Ashleigh has performed in Jordan Hall and Symphony Hall (Boston), the DiMenna Center and MoMA (NYC), the Royal Albert and Royal Festival Halls (London),\u00a0<em>Konzerthaus Berlin <\/em>and<em> Oper Frankfurt \u00a0<\/em>(Germany), <em>G<\/em><em>are du Nord <\/em>and\u00a0<em>Dampfzentrale Bern<\/em>\u00a0(Switzerland), <em>Centre Pompidou<\/em> (Paris), the Lee Hysan Concert Hall (Hong Kong) , and throughout Sofia, Bulgaria as part of the multi-disciplinary\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.180-degrees.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">180 Degrees Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ashleigh is a firm believer in holistic teaching and strives to spark curiosity in the arts, foster necessary life skills through music and serve as a mentor to each child. As an advocate of social change through education, she is a viola instructor in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bysoweb.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra&#8217;s Intensive Community Program (ICP)<\/a>, a rigorous string instrumental program which provides instruction to populations often underrepresented in classical music. Prior to ICP, she served as a teaching artist, mentor and violist of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.musiconnects.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">musiConnects<\/a>, a unique organization serving students, communities and families through the transformative power of chamber music.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p>(<em>via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.castleskins.org\/leaders.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Castle of our Skins&#8217; Team Leaders<\/a>, Ashleigh Gordon, Artistic &amp; Executive Director<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>As Artistic and Executive Director of\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Castle of our Skins, Ashleigh has helped create thought-provoking concert experiences that blend music and spoken word with history and culture\u00a0at the\u00a0<\/span>Museum of African American History\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">and\u00a0<\/span>Roxbury Community College\u00a0among other venues, and\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">co-designed\/led educational workshops for over 1,000 youths in the Greater Boston area primary schools and community centers. In recognition for her advocacy of social and cultural awareness, she has given presentations at\u00a0<\/span>IDEAS UMass Boston<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span>North Carolina Governor&#8217;s School of the West<span style=\"color: #000000;\">; has been featured in the\u00a0<\/span>June 2015<em>\u00a0International Musician Magazine<\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, the\u00a0<\/span>Boston Globe\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">and\u00a0<\/span>Improper Bostonian;\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">and awarded the St. Botolph Emerging Artist and Charles Walton Diversity Advocate award from the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">American Federation of Musicians<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ashleigh attended the<em>\u00a0Internationale Ensemble Modern Akademie<\/em>\u00a0at the\u00a0<em>Hochschule f\u00fcr Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt<\/em>\u00a0(Germany) and is a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace University and New England Conservatory.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Her primary teachers include Carol Rodland and Louise Zeitlin with supplemental solo and chamber music studies with Stephen Drury, Eric Rosenblith and Mai Motobuchi of the Borromeo String Quartet.
