Creative Placemaking: A Win-Win for Neighborhood Redevelopment
We’d like to introduce you to the concepts presented in two reports that show the win-win possibilities of creative placemaking – when residents, nonprofits, artists of all disciplines, developers, and local government work together to invigorate neighborhoods using “local creative assets as drivers of change…that served as a bulwark against the displacement that sometimes occurs when rising property values price out longtime residents.”
The reports by the Kresge Foundation and Point Forward offer the guidance that is needed in neighborhoods today. The current long-term trend of turning neighborhoods over to piecemeal market development simply creates vertical silos of exclusivity (and uniformity), homogenizing culture to commercial norms.
“These case studies illustrate how diverse stakeholders in two cities have included creative placemaking in a suite of solutions to foster equitable community development that reflects the authentic characters and histories of urban neighborhoods,” said Regina R. Smith, managing director of the Kresge Foundation’s Arts & Culture Program. ~ Integrating Arts, Culture Into Community Development a ‘Win-Win’, Philanthropy News Digest, July 5, 2017
