    Walker Art Center, Artist Op-Eds

Walker Art Center, Artist Op-Ed series

Citizenship is the right to have rights, and our attitude to citizenship, as states and individuals, defines and produces our attitude to other human beings.

~James Briddle, The Right to Have Rights

e congratulate the Walker Art Center for initiating a wonderfully innovative, commissioned artist op-ed seriesexamining the thinking of artists as citizens and change-makers“.

The opening essay by artist James Briddle, a London-based artist and writer, opines on citizen rights, states’ rights, and the politics between the two in “The Right to Have Rights”.

The essay is available for purchase as a print-on-demand pamphlet.

Imagine if nonprofits across the Commonwealth commissioned artists to write on the “state of our city” or “the state of our region” or “the state of being an artist”!

The goal of the Massachusetts Artists Leaders Coalition (MALC) is to ensure that Massachusetts artists of all disciplines have a voice in public dialogs, decisions, and key public policy initiatives that impact the artists community and the creative economy. MALC works to ensure that artists have a permanent place at the policy making table.
