Coalition Principles
The goal of the Massachusetts Artists Leaders Coalition (MALC) is to ensure that Massachusetts artists of all disciplines have a voice in public dialogs, decisions, and key public policy initiatives that impact the artists community and the creative economy. MALC works to ensure that artists have a permanent place at the policy making table.

MALC brings together artists leaders of all disciplines and artist(s) run organizations, initiatives, and businesses around key issues facing Massachusetts artists working in all disciplines. Though participants may have different perspectives on how best to address the issues facing our community, we are all committed to improving the social and economic position of all Massachusetts artists. The overall goal is to empower our community, support our artists leaders, and to mentor new artists leaders. MALC informs and works with policy makers to best to ensure that our community's needs are taken into account in their decision making.

MALC was founded in Summer of 2008. It is an artist-run all volunteer coalition, does not solicit funds, and does not endorse candidates for office. It is the only coalition of its kind in the country. MALC was a key collaborator for 2018 By Artists, For Artists report and in 2016 MALC also authored its Labor Policy paper. Both publications have been used by policy makers on local, state, and national levels to guide their work.

Membership for MALC is FREE and open to Massachusetts individual artists of all disciplines and to Massachusetts artist(s) run organizations/businesses/initiatives (artist(s) run means the following — for those with a board structure the majority of the governing board must be comprised of working artists and for a business/organization without a governing board structure — it must be run by an artist or artists). The Massachusetts Artists Leaders Coalition (MALC) attended all the public meetings of the State's Creative Economy Council since its founding. MALC was the Working Group for Artists Issues for the CEC until it ended at the end of 2016. In 2009 MALC gave its recommendations to the CEC (note due to the economic downturn it was strongly urged to forgo any recommendations for Year One and Two for new income streams): MALC_CEC09.pdf
